KUALA LUMPUR: Stern action should be taken against those behind the Molotov cocktail attack that damaged a Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission vehicle on Thursday, said Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
He said the motive was probably to intimidate the commission.
“I believe the commission will not give in to such a despicable act by some irresponsible party,” he told reporters after the launch of SME Corp Malaysia’s logo.
On Thursday morning, a four-wheel drive vehicle belonging to the commission’s branch in Klang was damaged in a Molotov cocktail attack.
Muhyiddin said he hoped the police would conduct a thorough investigation as it was a serious matter with certain parties trying to threaten the credibility and capability of the commission.
“The police and the commission are working closely to identify the perpetrators,” he said.
Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said the police and MACC should not be intimidated by the attack incident as they were “walking the right path”.
“I want to remind police and MACC officers that they are here to perform their duties.
“They should not be worried or afraid or bow to those who are trying to intimidate them,” he said after visiting the Kampung Gajah Prison in Kluang yesterday where an Election Commission registration campaign was going on.
On another matter, Hisham- muddin said the ministry would be gathering data and information related to the plan to transfer inmates back to their home countries to serve out jail terms.
He said the move was to ease congestions in prisons in the country. More than 50% of the inmates in the country’s prisons were foreigners.
“We need two to three months’ time to gather information as detailed studies must be done before we begin talks,” he said. - The Star.
