SHAH ALAM, Mon: There were attempts to scare political aide Teoh Beng Hock which caused him to slip and fall from the window on the 14th floor of Plaza Masalam building last month, an inquest into his death was told today.
Lawyer Malik Imtiaz Sarwar, who is holding a watching brief for the Selangor government, said he submitted the theory based on the injury found on Teoh's left wrist where there were nail marks.
"Our theory was that Teoh did not jump, but what happened was that there were attempts to scare him and when he slipped, someone caught hold of his hand causing the wrist watch to slip and to this day the watch has not been found," he added.
He put this suggestion to Dr Khairul Azman Ibrahim, 51, senior medical consultant at the Forensics Department, Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Hospital, who responded by saying that it was possible.
Teoh, 30, who was political secretary to Selangor executive councillor Ean Yong Hian Wah, was found dead on the fifth floor corridor of Plaza Masalam on July 16, after giving a statement in an investigation into alleged abuse of state government funds.
To another question by Malik Imtiaz on the possibility of the nail marks on Teoh's wrist were caused by somebody else, Dr Khairul Azman said that it was possible.
However, he objected to a suggestion by lawyer Rajpal Singh, who is holding a watching brief for the Bar Council, that the injury on Teoh's abdomen could have been inflicted by his belt when it was pulled by someone from behind.
"If somebody was holding the belt from behind, with strong pressure, the belt would have snapped and would not be found on the deceased's body," he added.
Lawyer Gobind Singh Deo, who is holding a watching brief for Teoh's family, then asked whether there was a possibility that Teoh was being held by his trousers.
Dr Khairul Azman: I don't think so because there was no sign of a struggle and the way Teoh fell showed that he landed some distance away instead of directly below.
He also said if Teoh had been held from the back, he would have landed face down, but there was no evidence to suggest that.
On the bruises found on Teo's anus, Dr Khairul Azman said there was no evidence to show that Teoh was harmed because the bruises could have been caused by the impact of falling from a high place.
Hearing before Coroner Azmil Muntapha Abas continues tomorrow. -- NST.
