Video of inquest on the Internet

KUALA LUMPUR: The proceedings of the coroner's inquest into the death of political aide Teoh Beng Hock is being posted on the Internet.

This is being done by the Attorney-General's Chambers which has taken the unprecedented step of posting video clips of the first three days of the inquest on its website (www.agc.gov.my).

It is learnt that the videos were made available online about four hours after the adjournment at the end of the day.

It is believed that this is the first time video recordings of a court proceeding are being made public.

An official of the Attorney-General's Chambers said the authorities had nothing to hide and the move was to allow the public to see for themselves what transpired at the inquest.

"Even if the public cannot be present at the inquest in person, they can still follow every single minute of the proceedings," the official said.

Under normal circumstances, audio or visual recordings of court proceedings are prohibited.

The Attorney-General's Chambers website also provides two documents explaining the function of a coroner's inquest.

On the first day of the inquest on July 29, acting coroner and Shah Alam High Court deputy registrar Azmil Muntapha Abas had informed the lawyers that the proceedings would be recorded.

Notes of proceedings would also be provided to the various legal teams the following day.

These notes are also available on the Attorney-General's Chambers website.

The inquest will continue tomorrow when three government pathologists are scheduled to take the stand.

On July 16, Teoh was found dead on the fifth floor landing of Plaza Masalam, nine floors below the Selangor Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission office where he was interrogated just hours before. - NST.
