A plot to discredit MACC, says DPM

Farrah Naz Karim: Reporting from Perth

ATTACKS against the Malay-sian Anti-Corruption Commission were crafted, calculated and engineered by the opposition to discredit the graft-busters, said Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

He said the opposition was all out to create distrust among the people against the commission.

"They (opposition) are hoping to kill two birds with one stone -- causing distrust against the MACC and indirectly getting the people to distrust the government.

"MACC is an independent organisation. Don't rip it apart just because of one incident," he said referring to the death of Teoh Beng Hock who died after having his statement recorded at the MACC office in Shah Alam, last month.

Muhyiddin in a media conference in Perth, also slammed the death threat sent to MACC chief commissioner Datuk Seri Ahmad Said Hamdan.

It was reported on Wednesday that Ahmad Said had received the letter on July 24.

The handwritten letter, peppered with profanities, also threatened his family and MACC officers.

The sender blamed Ahmad Said and his men for Teoh's death and lambasted them for "not acting against Barisan Nasional and MCA leaders and instead focusing their probe on DAP leaders.

"The threat is obviously intended to get the MACC to stop doing their job," Muhyiddin said, dispelling suggestions that the letter was concocted to garner sympathy for the MACC. - NST
